Civil marriage

Celebration of a civil marriage

Persons wishing to enter into a civil marriage must satisfy certain requirements and respect certain conditions. The marriage must be celebrated in accordance with the regulations of the Code civil du Québec and of recent amendments permitting mayors, municipal councilors or local government officials who so wish to be recognized as authorized celebrants for the proclamation of a civil marriage or a civil union. Because a member of the municipal council of the Ville de Mont-Tremblant has made the request of the Quebec Ministry of Justice in this regard, he is now recognized as being able to officiate as celebrant on the territory of the Ville de Mont-Tremblant. Here are a few indications of a general nature regarding preparation for this important event.

CELEBRANT

The authorized celebrant for the Ville de Mont-Tremblant is Councilor Vincent Perreault. He is assisted by the Town Clerk's Department of the Ville de Mont-Tremblant.

PREREQUISITE QUESTIONNAIRE

Your first step is to fill out and sign the questionnaire provided for this purpose. This form is essential to the interview that you will have with the celebrant. All information requested must be provided and you must attach the original of your birth certificate and other pertinent documents depending on your situation. These originals will be returned to you.

INTERVIEW

On the day and at the time determined for the interview which is prerequisite and obligatory to the celebration of marriage, the future spouses must appear with a witness to sign a declaration which will serve in the publication of the marriage. At the time of the signature of the declaration, it is necessary that the witness be of age, but it is not necessary that he or she be one of the witnesses to the marriage. The date, time and place of the marriage will be confirmed during the interview.

The date and time of the interview will be confirmed by telephone by the celebrant or by the person who assists him or her.

PUBLICATION

In accordance with the law, the declaration of the future spouses must be posted for at least 20 days prior to the date of the wedding at Mont-Tremblant city hall at 5100 , montée Ryan, Mont-Tremblant, or at the place where the marriage will be celebrated, and at the Palais de justice in Saint-Jérôme.

CEREMONY

The marriage will be celebrated in the Ville de Mont-Tremblant city hall in the council chamber, or in any other suitable place on the territory of the Ville de Mont-Tremblant, after a waiting period of 20 days as required following the publication of the bans, between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m., and may be on any day, following agreement with the celebrant. A ceremony elsewhere than at city hall remains an exceptional circumstance and must be agreed to in advance with the celebrant.

WITNESSES

The marriage ceremony requires the presence of two witnesses.

ARRIVAL

We ask that you arrive at the Ville de Mont-Tremblant city hall 30 minutes before the time set for the ceremony. Any lateness may cause problems for weddings that may be taking place after this one.

FEES

The fee for a marriage ceremony is fixed by the rates for civil judicial fees and the court office fees and by regulation of the municipal council and is subject to applicable federal and provincial taxes. These costs must be settled via cash, postal money order, bank money order or by certified cheque payable to the order of the Ville de Mont-Tremblant.

The cost is $375, plus the taxes.

COPY OF THE MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE

If you would like to have a certificate or a copy of the marriage certificate, you must make your request to the Directeur de l'état civil du Québec.

PROTOCOL and ETIQUETTE

Use of confetti, rice or other items to enhance the event is forbidden. In addition, the consumption of drinks (alcoholic or not) and food is prohibited in city hall and the adjacent land. It is, however, permitted to photograph or film.

If the ceremony does not take place in city hall, the place chosen for the ceremony must respect the solemn nature of the event, and access must be public.

In accordance with article 368 al.2 of the Code civil du Québec, it is timely to undergo a prenuptial medical examination.
