Pool, hot tub and whirlpool bath

A permit is required the installation of an inground pool or an above-ground pool.

Installation

Installation of a pool, hot tub or a whirlpool bath must respect the following distances:

Above-ground pool

1.5 m from the main building
1.5 m from the property lines

Inground pool 3 m from the main building
1.5 m from the property lines
Spa and whirlpool No specific distance of the main building
2 m from the property lines
In all cases 6.5 m from an aerial medium voltage electrical network
4.5 m from an aerial low-voltage electrical network

Pools must be installed in the side yard or backyard.

Safety barriers and fences

Safety fences must surround all pools, hot tubs and whirlpool baths whose walls are less than 1.2 m (1.4 m for inflatable swimming pools and those that can be dismantled) in height and have no safety devices.

Moreover, the fences have to respect the following rules:

Minimum height of the fence 1.2 m
Maximum height of the fence 2 m

A fence…

  • … must be installed at a minimal distance of 1,5 m from the walls;
  • … may not be replaced by a hedge;
  • … must to be designed so that it cannot be climbed;
  • … must prevent passage of a spherical object 10 cm in diameter;
  • … is not necessary for a hot tub or a whirlpool bath having a rigid, padlocked cover.

Filling the pool

Every owner, renter or occupant of a property, building, dwelling, house or room having water supplied by the Ville water system is forbidden to fill a swimming pool, except during the following hours: midnight to 6 a.m. However, maintenance of the water level for proper functioning is permitted at all times. This point does not apply to the filling of wading pools with a capacity of less than 600 litres.
